London Lions Administration: A Helping Hand From Hudson Weir
Hudson Weir have been appointed as administrators for the reigning British Basketball League champions, the London Lions.
Joint administrators Hasib Howlader and Nimish Patel – both Licensed Insolvency Practitioners – have stepped in to guide the club through this challenging time and are currently searching for a buyer.
The Lions men’s and women’s teams are both reigning British champions and the women were crowned winners of the EuroCup when they beat Turkish giants Besiktas in April.
Who Are The London Lions?
The club was originally founded in 1977 as the Hemel Hempstead Lakers. They later moved to Milton Keynes, becoming the Milton Keynes Lions.
As of 2012, they relocated to London and became known as the London Lions, with their home games played at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
The Lions women’s team was founded in 2008 and entered the Women’s British Basketball League in 2017.
In 2024, they became the first ever British team to win the EuroCup, defeating Turkish rivals Besiktas 149-145 on aggregate. They also won the WBBL Championship, winning the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.
The men also achieved a remarkable double victory in the 2023-24 season, winning both the BBL Championship as the top team in the regular season and the BBL Playoff Final against the Cheshire Phoenix.
The Lions are now seeking new ownership of their club to help them reach even greater heights.
Hudson Weir’s Role As London Lions Administrators
Hudson Weir stepped in to manage the London Lions administration on the 30th of July 2024. The goal is to ensure the team’s future is secure and their rich history and achievements are carried through this transition.
Hasib is keen to find a buyer that will maintain the strong relationship the team has built with their local community and loyal fanbase, which are a large part of the Lions’ success.
He added: “With such a rich heritage and pedigree, this team has the support of the local community as its backbone and has a loyal fan base.
“We are now seeking a serious buyer to take the London Lions on the next part of their journey, to ensure this club continues to thrive and grow. The sale will include the assets of the business and all goodwill amassed over the last 47 years.
“We are interested in talking to serious prospective buyers and, whilst our focus is to sell the club to the best bidder, we are open to serious offers.”
